7-Day Open Sky

Six quiet days, one question.

You have learned to calm the mind. Now the question changes: who is the one who is calm, and who was the one who was not? This week, mostly in silence, slowly turns attention back on itself. You watch thoughts, then feelings, then the one who watches. One day is entirely silent. One night you give what you are ready to leave to the fire. You are not the cloud; you are the sky.

The journey.

Day 1

Arrive

Why we cannot sit with ourselves. The silence begins by the fire.

Day 2

Breath and body

Deep breathing, a body scan, music in silence.

Day 3

Watching the mind

How a thought is born, and the space between two thoughts.

Day 4

Feelings and the ego

The ego reacts, life responds. Feeling a feeling without its story.

Day 5

A whole day of silence

No talk, no lesson. Only the bell, long sittings, and an afternoon alone in nature.

Day 6

Who am I?

Awareness and what appears in it. Self-inquiry, open awareness, and at night the letting-go fire.

Day 7

Return

Taking the present moment home. Gratitude, a letter to yourself, the last circle.

How a day feels.

The days get quieter as the week goes on, and the sittings get longer, but never longer than you can carry. Mornings still begin with movement and the sky; the science hour still gives each day its meaning. Every evening you can ask Safdar Sahar anything, and many people find their real question only around the fifth day.

What you’ll do

The science hourA talk by Safdar Sahar on the day’s theme: what happens in your brain, body and hormones, in plain Urdu.
Guided meditationLed live, in Urdu, around the theme of the day.
Breath practiceSimple counted breathing that calms the nervous system.
Morning movementGentle yoga and stretching with Arooza Mattia, so the body is ready to sit.
Meditative walksSlow, silent walking, sometimes barefoot on the grass.
Mindful mealsThe first minutes of every meal in silence. Taste, slowly.
Body scanMoving attention from head to toe, finding where stress hides.
Silent sittingsShort at first, longer with the days. Just you, sitting with yourself.
DialogueYour questions, answered by Safdar Sahar, every day.
JournalingOne question a day in your retreat notebook.
Sharing circleOn the first and last day. Everyone speaks, nobody advises.
Sunrise and sunset sittingsOutside, as the day opens and closes.
Mindful workA small task done with full attention: watering plants, sweeping a porch. Presence you can take home.
Evening gatheringsA different evening each night: a story, music in silence, the fire, the stars.
A letter to yourselfWritten on the last day, sent back to you three months later.
A day of deep silenceA whole day with nothing to do but be.
Time alone in natureAn afternoon in your own corner of the place.
Who am I?Turning attention back on the one who is watching.
